TROY, Ala. — The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns softball team inched closer to a Sun Belt Conference title with a thrilling 2-1 walk-off victory over Appalachian State on Thursday morning. Freshman pitcher Mallory Wheeler, who has been a standout this season after earning Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week honors, dominated in the circle, striking out six batters and holding the Mountaineers scoreless for six innings.
App State broke the deadlock in the seventh with Leah Gore’s solo home run, her 11th of the season, putting them ahead 1-0. However, Louisiana quickly bounced back in the bottom of the inning. Dayzja Williams smashed a double into left field, advancing herself and teammate Maddie Hayden into scoring position. With the bases loaded and two outs, senior third baseman Sam Roe delivered a decisive walk-off hit to left field, scoring the winning runs.
“I knew she was coming at me, so I needed to go at her,” Roe stated after the game, emphasizing the importance of stepping up at crucial moments. Head coach Alyson Habetz praised the team’s composure, stating, “There was a belief that everyone in the circle believed we can do this — and we’re gonna do this.”
With this victory, the Ragin’ Cajuns secure a spot in the semifinals, where they will face Coastal Carolina on Friday, May 9, at 4 p.m. The game will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
