Sovereignty Triumphs Over Journalism to Capture the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga

In a thrilling rematch from the Kentucky Derby, Sovereignty triumphed over Journalism to clinch the 157th Belmont Stakes at Saratoga Springs, N.Y., on Saturday. Under jockey Junior Alvarado, Sovereignty, the 5-2 second favorite, completed the race in 2 minutes and 0.69 seconds, finishing three lengths ahead of Journalism, who was the 2-1 favorite. This victory mirrored the same top three finish as the Derby, with Baeza securing third place again.

Sovereignty, trained by Bill Mott and owned by Godolphin, previously won the Derby in May. The colt chose to skip the Preakness, forgoing the chance for a potential Triple Crown win, which hasn’t been achieved since Justify won it in 2018. Journalism, who won the Preakness, was the only contender to participate in all three Triple Crown races.

The Belmont Stakes, one of the esteemed events in the horse racing Triple Crown series, showcased a fast track that dried out after morning showers. With an impressive performance, Sovereignty solidified its position as a strong contender in the racing circuit, further establishing the rivalry with Journalism.

As the horses left the gate, anticipation was high, particularly for Journalism, who was attempting to build on his Preakness victory. However, it was Sovereignty’s speed and strategy that ultimately paved the way for a decisive win at this prestigious event, highlighting the ongoing narratives of resilience and competition in thoroughbred racing.
