Tragic Accident Claims Lives of Two Children in Schriever, Louisiana

SCHRIEVER, La. — A devastating accident on Thursday claimed the lives of two young children, aged 6 and 12, when their vehicle was struck by an 18-wheeler on Highway 311. The mother, who was driving south and attempting to turn left towards a nearby food stand, was also injured in the collision, which occurred around 4 p.m.

Eyewitnesses recounted hearing a loud noise and witnessing the chaotic aftermath. Sue Williams, a nearby resident, described the heartbreaking scene, noting the mother’s distress and the severely damaged car. All occupants were transported to a hospital, but tragically, both children succumbed to their injuries.

Investigators from the Louisiana State Police revealed that none of the passengers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. Safety experts underscore the alarming trend in Louisiana, where around 50% of fatal crash victims are unrestrained, escalating to 60% among children.

Local residents expressed concerns over the highway’s speed, with witnesses indicating that vehicles often exceed the 55 MPH limit. The area is known for its dangerous stretches, marked by memorials for other victims. The community mourns this tragic loss and the need for increased roadway safety measures.
