Hope Renewed in Iowa Cold Cases Following DNA Breakthrough
Cedar Rapids, Iowa – Families of missing persons in Iowa are finding renewed hope as advancements in DNA technology lead to recent breakthroughs in cold cases. This sentiment resonates particularly with Carolyn Pospisil, stepmother of Erin Pospisil, who went missing in Cedar Rapids in 2001.
Erin, 15 at the time, vanished after leaving a friend’s house on June 3. Eyewitnesses reported seeing her get into a black 90’s Chevrolet Cavalier, but despite extensive searching, she has never been found. Carolyn Pospisil expressed her unwavering hope that her daughter will one day return, grappling with the emotional weight of waiting for answers after more than two decades.
"Every day I still think, maybe she’ll walk through the door," Carolyn shared. Reflecting on the initial investigation, she noted that authorities labeled Erin as a runaway, which prevented crucial DNA evidence from being collected at the time. "We didn’t think to save her hairbrush or toothbrush for DNA."
While Erin’s DNA is part of a database, Carolyn remains hopeful that the advancements in DNA technology will someday lead to new developments in her daughter’s case. Recently, Linn County investigators successfully arrested a suspect in a 1983 murder through DNA analysis, highlighting the potential for older cases to be solved. Carolyn struggles with mixed emotions when she hears about other cases being resolved, viewing them as both hopeful signs and reminders of her own ongoing plight.
"This technology might be what finds her," she said. Yet, each time a lead fizzles, it becomes more challenging. Despite the heartache, Carolyn stays resilient. If you have any information concerning Erin Pospisil’s disappearance, please contact the Cedar Rapids Police Department.
