Rick Young: Rodeo Legend Reflects on a Lifetime of Laughs and Danger
GLADEWATER — Rick Young, a celebrated rodeo clown and bullfighter, reminisced about his adrenaline-fueled career during a recent visit to Gladewater. At 91, Young, affectionately dubbed the "Agin’ Cajun," has traded the rodeo arena for retirement, trading stories of injury and camaraderie.
For over 70 years, Young entertained audiences with comedic antics while bravely facing formidable bulls, earning accolades including induction into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and the National Cowboy Hall of Fame. Known for his vibrant performances, Young suffered numerous injuries, including broken ribs and legs, yet he remained undeterred. “People say, ‘Do you miss rodeoin’?’ I say, ‘Not the broken bones, but I miss my friends,’” he explained.
Young’s passion for rodeo ignited in high school and never waned, leading him to perform at events across the U.S. and beyond. Recently inducted into the Stockyards Steakhouse Hall of Fame, his storytelling continues to resonate with fans. “People love to laugh,” he remarked.
As he reflects on his journey, Young emphasizes the community and heart required in rodeo. “It’s been worth all the pain for the friends I’ve made,” he concluded, embodying the spirit of the sport he loves.
