Oscar Smith Aims for NCAA Glory at Outdoor Championships
RUSTON, LA – Louisiana Tech’s Oscar Smith is poised to make history as he competes in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, starting June 11 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. With impressive credentials, Smith seeks to become the second Bulldog to secure a national title.
The championship event runs from June 11-14, featuring Smith in the 110m hurdles, with preliminary heats scheduled for Wednesday at 7:08 p.m. and finals on Friday at 7:42 p.m., broadcast on ESPN.
In just one season at Louisiana Tech, the Nassau, Bahamas native has established himself as one of the most elite hurdlers in the program’s history. He currently holds eight top-10 marks in the 60m hurdles and four in the 110m hurdles, breaking a nearly 20-year-old record set by Nolan Jackson in 2006.
Smith’s journey included multiple podium finishes this season, highlighted by a record-breaking 7.70 at the Conference USA Championships, which earned him a silver medal. He continued to shine during the outdoor season, recording significant improvements in his times. After a strong start at the Florida Relays and a fourth-place finish at the Arkansas Spring Invitational, he claimed victory at the Jim Mize Invitational with a time of 13.61.
Shining brightest at the NCAA East Regional, Smith clocked the fastest times among 48 competitors, setting a personal best of 13.42. This performance ranks him second in Louisiana Tech history, just behind a 1974 record.
