Press Release: Louisiana Begins Red Snapper Season, Landings Data Released
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) has announced Red Snapper landing estimates, reporting that as of June 1, 2025, 251,911 pounds—or 28.2%—of the state’s total recreational allocation of 894,955 pounds has been caught. The private recreational Red Snapper season commenced on May 1 in both state and federal waters, allowing fishing seven days a week with a limit of four fish per person and a minimum size requirement of 16 inches.
Anglers, both resident and non-resident, are required to hold a valid Louisiana recreational fishing license and a free Recreational Offshore Landing Permit (ROLP), which can be obtained online. The permit must be carried while fishing.
State for-hire charter vessels without federal permits are restricted to a 9 nautical mile limit and must also obtain a ROLP. Conversely, federal for-hire vessels can fish in federal waters during the designated federal season, running from June 1 to September 16.
LDWF urges anglers to mitigate barotrauma in Red Snapper by employing descending devices for safe fish release. For further details on regulations and landing estimates, visit the LDWF website.
