Press Release: Mobilization of Military Personnel to Support Immigration Enforcement
October 2023
In a significant move to bolster border security, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has authorized the mobilization of up to 700 military personnel to assist U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Florida, Louisiana, and Texas. This mobilization comes as part of a broader effort, with over 6,600 active-duty service members previously deployed to the southwest border since the national emergency declaration by former President Donald Trump.
Under a Title 10 duty status, the deployed personnel will provide logistical and administrative support at ICE facilities, although they will not engage in direct law enforcement activities. "This initiative is part of a collaborative effort with the Department of Homeland Security to free up law enforcement resources for crucial tasks," a Department of Defense statement noted.
Additionally, Hegseth has implemented the SkillBridge program, encouraging transitioning service members within their final six months of service to secure roles in federal border security positions. This program offers civilian training opportunities while allowing personnel to maintain their military benefits. The Defense Human Resource Agency aims to streamline participation in SkillBridge, ensuring that these critical career opportunities are widely promoted among transitioning military members.
