Louisiana Tech Mourns the Passing of Legendary Broadcaster Dave Nitz

Ruston, La. – October 3, 2023 – The Louisiana Tech community is heartbroken following the passing of Dave Nitz, the renowned “Voice of the Bulldogs,” who died at the age of 82. A fixture in Louisiana Tech athletics for over five decades, Nitz’s death has left a profound impact on fans and the university alike.

Louisiana Tech President Jim Henderson reflected on Nitz’s legacy, stating, “For 50 years, Dave saw it all—great plays, championships, and the heart of Bulldog sports. His iconic voice allowed fans to experience the game from any distance, leaving an indelible mark on this University.” Director of Athletics Ryan Ivey echoed these sentiments, praising Nitz for his incredible storytelling that shaped many unforgettable moments in the university’s athletic history.

Born in Milton, West Virginia, Nitz began his broadcasting career at various institutions before landing at Louisiana Tech in 1974. He first gained recognition through his coverage of baseball, eventually becoming the lead voice for Bulldog football, basketball, and baseball. Over his career, Nitz called an estimated 4,500 games, crafting memories for generations of Tech fans with his signature phrases and thrilling calls.

A passionate member of the Louisiana sports community, Nitz was inducted into the Louisiana Tech Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011 and the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 2019. He was also honored as the Louisiana Sportscaster of the Year in 2009.

Beyond his broadcasting accolades, Nitz was a cherished husband, father, and friend to many. He is survived by his wife Marlene and their three children. As the Bulldog community remembers the beloved voice behind the mic, his final sign-off—“So long, everybody”—will resonate as a heartfelt farewell.
