Dave Nitz, Legendary Voice of Louisiana Tech, Passes Away at 82

RUSTON – The Louisiana Tech community mourns the loss of Dave Nitz, the beloved "Voice of the Bulldogs," who passed away at age 82 on Tuesday. His death marks the end of a remarkable 50-year legacy, during which he became an essential part of Louisiana Tech athletics.

President Jim Henderson expressed profound sadness at Nitz’s passing, noting that his iconic voice bridged distances, allowing fans to experience game moments no matter where they were. Athletics Director Ryan Ivey highlighted Nitz’s extraordinary storytelling ability that vividly captured some of the greatest moments in the university’s sports history.

A West Virginia native, Nitz began his broadcasting career at Arkansas Tech before joining Louisiana Tech in 1974. Over five decades, he called over 4,500 games, making indelible marks on the hearts of fans with his memorable phrases, such as “You Gotta Love It!” His enthusiastic commentary transformed ordinary plays into lasting memories.

Nitz’s contributions to sports broadcasting were recognized through various honors, including his induction into both the LA Tech Athletics Hall of Fame and the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. He is survived by his wife, Marlene, and their three children. The family plans a small, private memorial service.
