Louisiana Tech Mourns the Loss of Legendary Broadcaster Dave Nitz
RUSTON – The Louisiana Tech University community is in mourning following the passing of Dave Nitz, the iconic “Voice of the Bulldogs,” who died Tuesday at the age of 82. Nitz dedicated an impressive 50 years to broadcasting Louisiana Tech athletics, leaving an unforgettable legacy.
President Jim Henderson expressed heartfelt condolences to Nitz’s family, stating, “His iconic voice allowed Tech fans to experience the game no matter their distance from Ruston.” Nitz’s influence remains deeply woven into the fabric of the university and its sports culture.
Athletics Director Ryan Ivey reflected on Nitz’s monumental role, noting, “Dave was the conduit of Louisiana Tech athletics to our passionate fan base… Our thoughts and prayers are with Dave’s family and all who loved him.” With over 4,500 games called during his career, Nitz brought to life countless memorable moments, from thrilling touchdowns to championship victories, creating lasting stories for generations of fans.
A native of Milton, West Virginia, Nitz’s broadcasting journey began at Arkansas Tech and furthered at institutions including William & Mary and Georgia Southern. His love for storytelling truly blossomed at Louisiana Tech, where he first called NCAA baseball in 1974. He officially joined the Football Network later that year, becoming the voice behind the microphone for football, basketball, and baseball.
Nitz’s signature phrases, including “You Gotta Love It!”, and his excited calls during pivotal plays became ingrained in the collective memory of fans. His impact on the community was profound, earning him numerous accolades, including inductions into both the LA Tech Athletics and Louisiana Sports Halls of Fame.
Survived by his wife Marlene and their three children, Dave Nitz leaves behind a cherished legacy as both a family man and a beloved commentator. His farewell sign-off, "So long, everybody," resonates deeply today as the Bulldogs bid a heartfelt goodbye.
