Remembering Dave Nitz: The Voice of the Bulldogs
Ruston, LA — Dave Nitz, the beloved voice of the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, passed away this morning at the age of 82, leaving behind a legacy spanning over five decades. Nitz was a master storyteller and dedicated broadcaster, having called more than 4,500 Tech games throughout his career. His contributions earned him a spot in the Louisiana Tech Hall of Fame.
Malcolm Butler, a fellow broadcaster and colleague, expressed the profound impact Nitz had on the LA Tech community. “He truly is a legend at Louisiana Tech,” Butler commented. “It’s a sad day for Tech nation.” Nitz, a native of West Virginia, arrived in Ruston in spring 1974, where he called his inaugural Bulldog baseball game during an NCAA Regional contest at the old Arlington Stadium. His passion for baseball was evident, captivating Tech fans and bringing the excitement of games directly into their homes.
Last year, Nitz called his final game, a Bulldog baseball matchup, having transitioned football and men’s basketball responsibilities to Butler earlier on. Butler revealed the challenge of following in Nitz’s footsteps. “I struggle with it… when something great happens on-air, it doesn’t feel right because it’s me and not Dave Nitz,” he reflected.
Nitz is survived by his wife Marlene and their three children: Jamie, Jeff, and Jay. The family plans to hold a small, private memorial service to honor his memory.
Dave Nitz’s voice will forever resonate in the hearts of Louisiana Tech fans, a cherished presence that brought decades of sports history to life. His impact on the community and the sports broadcasting world will not soon be forgotten.
