Understanding Hypertension: Insights from Cardiologist Dr. Santosh Kumar Dora
Modern medicine has transformed our comprehension of hypertension, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and personalized management strategies. Dr. Santosh Kumar Dora, a Consultant Cardiologist at Mumbai’s Asian Heart Institute, shared his insights on this pressing health issue in a recent interview with HT Lifestyle.
Dr. Dora noted that hypertension is often misrepresented as merely a numerical problem linked to blood pressure readings. “Today, we appreciate the intricate interplay of genetic, inflammatory, and hormonal factors that contribute to hypertension,” he explained. He highlighted that hypertension isn’t just a number; it represents a complex pathophysiological state affecting the heart and the vascular system.
Hypertension is classified into several categories. Primary hypertension, the most common form, lacks an identifiable cause and is due to an interplay of genes and environmental factors like diet and lifestyle. Conversely, secondary hypertension arises from medical conditions, while resistant hypertension persists despite multiple medications. The most severe form, malignant hypertension, requires urgent attention due to its life-threatening potential.
Dr. Dora emphasized that even well-controlled chronic hypertension can lead to long-term damage, thus early detection and consistent management are essential. The condition can result in serious complications such as atherosclerosis, hypertensive cardiomyopathy, and left ventricular hypertrophy, all of which hamper heart function and increase the risk of heart failure.
On a positive note, Dr. Dora stated that some types of hypertension are curable, particularly secondary forms, through surgical interventions. For primary hypertension, lifestyle modifications—such as reducing sodium intake, exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, and managing stress—can significantly help in lowering blood pressure and improving overall heart health.
