Louisiana International Paper Mill Closure Sparks Turmoil | Business News

Press Article: Louisiana Forestry Industry Faces Crisis After Mill Closure

The Louisiana forestry industry is reeling from the abrupt closure of International Paper’s Red River mill in Natchitoches Parish. The mill, which closed its doors in April, was a significant buyer of pulpwood, purchasing 1.6 million tons annually—equivalent to 250 truckloads a day. Industry experts warn the effects are far-reaching, leaving many loggers and foresters scrambling for solutions. Bradley McDowell of Pineland Contractors is facing a $38,000 monthly loss and may need to halve his crew to survive.

The mill, a major employer and taxpayer since 1974, was essential for local economies, with its closure contributing to a dip in tax revenue. Economic development officials hope displaced workers will secure new jobs, but adjustments in the forestry sector remain uncertain.

As pulpwood demand declines—partly due to the shift toward recyclables—smaller timber operations struggle to adapt. Many landowners report difficulties finding loggers, further complicating the landscape. The state Legislature allocated $1.5 million to Natchitoches Parish to enhance export infrastructure for wood chips and sawdust.

Louisiana officials are in talks with International Paper to identify potential buyers for the mill site, as the industry braves this unexpected upheaval.
