Press Release: Conservation Efforts to Protect Guåhan’s Endangered Savanna Plants

Guam – The vibrant native savanna plants of Guåhan are not only a visual marvel, showcasing a rich palette of reds, yellows, and greens, but also play a crucial role in the island’s ecosystem and biocultural heritage. The University of Guam’s Center for Island Sustainability (CIS) is committed to conservation efforts aimed at protecting these unique species, particularly the endangered herb Hedyotis megalantha.

Hedyotis megalantha, found nowhere else but Guåhan, thrives in the island’s nutrient-poor, acidic volcanic soils. This striking plant features dark green, glossy leaves and delicate white flowers tinged with lilac. While it shows resilience, the species faces significant threats from urban development, invasive species, and habitat degradation.

The CIS team is actively working on monitoring existing populations and propagating seeds in collaboration with local authorities. Their Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) aims to balance sustainable development with the protection of endangered species, necessitating compliance from developers to mitigate impacts on these plants.

Rosalind Hunter-Anderson’s research has linked Guåhan’s savanna origins to the Pleistocene, underscoring the historical significance of these ecosystems. The team believes that fostering awareness about these plants can encourage local landowners to cultivate savanna species in their yards, fostering a connection to Guåhan’s rich ecological legacy.

To learn more about conservation efforts and the beauty of Guåhan’s ecosystems, follow the UOG CIS Island Conservation Lab on Instagram (@uogcis.islandconservationlab) and Facebook. Together, we can help ensure that these remarkable plants thrive for generations to come.
