American rapper Macklemore has canceled an upcoming concert in Dubai in protest of the United Arab Emirates’ alleged support for paramilitary forces in Sudan, which are involved in a humanitarian crisis and genocide. The UAE has denied arming the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), but the United Nations has reported evidence to the contrary. The conflict in Sudan has led to thousands of deaths and millions displaced from their homes. Amid accusations at a U.N. Security Council meeting, the UAE has been involved in peace talks to end the fighting.
Macklemore’s decision to cancel the concert was influenced by requests to show solidarity with the people of Sudan and a boycott of doing business in the UAE. He has also shown public support for Palestinians amid the conflict in Gaza. The rapper expressed concern about jeopardizing future shows in the area but remains firm in his decision until the UAE stops supporting the RSF. He also called on other artists to consider the impact of performing in the UAE.
The RSF originated from Janjaweed fighters under former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of genocide in Darfur. Dubai, known for attracting A-list performers, has faced criticism for its strict control of speech. Other artists, such as comedian Dave Chappelle, have also addressed controversial issues while performing in the UAE. Macklemore, a Grammy-winning rapper, is known for his hit song “Thrift Shop.”
