Alaska’s Fat Bear Week voting commences following fatal bear attack on contestant

Voting in Katmai National Park’s Fat Bear Week was delayed after a bear attack resulted in the death of a competitor. The attack was captured live on webcams in the park. Fat Bear Week is a celebration of the bears’ successful preparations for hibernation, with 12 bears competing to be crowned the fattest of the season.

Surviving hibernation requires the bears to gain weight by feasting on salmon and other snacks in a short time. This year’s contest features 8 bears competing in the first round of a bracket, with more bears getting byes to the second round. Bears #909 Jr. and #128 are facing off in a matchup, with Grazer holding last year’s title. Another matchup to watch is between Bear #856 and Bear #504.

The park service shared heartbreaking stories of some of the bears, including Grazer’s loss of her cubs to a dominant bear, and Bear #901’s return alone after her cubs did not survive. The winner of Fat Bear Week will be declared the fattest bear of the season. The competition is based on the bears’ ability to gain weight and survive the harsh conditions they face in the wild. The voting period will conclude on Tuesday.
