Israel’s parliament has voted to ban the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, accusing its employees of terrorist activities. The UN had investigated and found some allegations to lack evidence, but nine employees may have been involved in a terror attack against Israel. The ban on UNRWA comes after the US warned Israel about restricting military aid if humanitarian assistance in Gaza isn’t increased. UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini condemned the ban, calling it collective punishment and putting children at risk. Many countries, including Ireland, Norway, Slovenia, and Spain, have expressed concern over the ban.
Israeli parliament members argue that UNRWA’s work is counterproductive in the region and won’t lead to peace and stability. Netanyahu has also accused the UN of being antisemitic and banned the UN Secretary-General from entering Israel. IDF soldiers have been accused of attacking UN peacekeepers in Lebanon during their fight against Hezbollah militants, causing tensions with the UN.
The ban on UNRWA’s operations has sparked international concern and condemnation. Lazzarini has stated that ending UNRWA’s services will not strip Palestinians of their refugee status, protected by a UN resolution until a lasting solution is found. Overall, the ban on UNRWA has led to increased tensions between Israel and the international community over humanitarian aid in Gaza and the treatment of Palestinian refugees.
