Lawmakers at the Louisiana State Capitol are at a standstill during a special legislative session, with no breakthroughs on new sales taxes proposed by Gov. Jeff Landry. Both the House and Senate have been in short sessions with negotiations ongoing, but concerns remain over increasing sales taxes on constituents to offset an income tax cut. Despite this, Rep. Beau Beaullieu of the Acadiana delegation remains optimistic that a consensus will be reached, leading to Louisiana having one of the lowest personal income tax rates in the country. The hope is to eliminate a franchise tax and reduce the inventory tax as part of the tax reform package. However, time is running out as the special session must end on Monday evening at 6 p.m. If a resolution is not reached, Gov. Landry’s tax overhaul plan may be in jeopardy. Stay tuned as negotiations continue in Baton Rouge to see if lawmakers can come to an agreement before the session deadline.
