FDA Greenlights At-Home HPV Test for Cervical Cancer Screening

The FDA recently approved the Teal Wand, the first at-home test for cervical cancer screening, developed by Teal Health. Traditional cervical cancer screenings, conducted during pelvic exams, can be uncomfortable, leading some women to delay or avoid screening altogether. Dr. Emeline Aviki noted that the exam is often canceled because it is not a pleasant experience.

Cervical cancer is largely preventable through regular screenings and the HPV vaccine; however, despite declining rates since the 1970s, recent reports show that screening rates have stagnated. An estimated 13,360 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer this year, with about 4,320 deaths, highlighting the significant need for ongoing screenings. The American Cancer Society noted that many women diagnosed were not current with their screenings.

The Teal Wand allows for HPV detection using a vaginal swab, offering a less invasive alternative to the standard Pap smear. It is unique because the sample can be collected at home, potentially increasing access, especially for women in rural areas, who face greater risks of cervical cancer due to lower screening access.

Patients can order the test kit following a telehealth appointment, collect samples at home, and send them to a lab for analysis. Teal Health’s virtual providers will assist with next steps if results are positive. However, uncertainties remain regarding the test’s costs and whether patients will pursue necessary follow-up care.

Teal Health’s CEO anticipates that insurance will cover the test due to its endorsement by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. Experts emphasize the importance of regular gynecological exams beyond cervical cancer screening to ensure comprehensive health care.
