Man who was mistakenly deported is alive and detained in El Salvador, according to Trump administration

The Trump administration filed a report stating that Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a man mistakenly deported to El Salvador, is alive and detained in El Salvador’s Terrorism Confinement Center. This filing was in response to a court order demanding daily updates on Abrego Garcia’s whereabouts. President Trump had previously suggested bringing Abrego Garcia back to the U.S., but later said he is working with the President of El Salvador to address terrorism. Abrego Garcia’s lawyers are seeking further relief from the court to ensure his return to the United States. The Supreme Court had previously ordered the government to facilitate his release from a Salvadoran prison. Abrego Garcia, a legal U.S. resident protected from deportation, was sent to El Salvador by mistake along with alleged gang members. Immigration officials have acknowledged the error, stating that there is no evidence he was in a gang, but claim he is a member of MS-13. A hearing is scheduled for Tuesday to monitor the government’s progress in bringing Abrego Garcia back to the U.S.
