Iconic New Orleans sports broadcaster Ed Daniels honored in final farewell

Ed Daniels, a beloved sports journalist in Louisiana, was laid to rest after a funeral service at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church. Daniels, who spent over four decades telling the sports stories of Louisiana, was remembered by friends and colleagues as a hardworking and caring individual. Former Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard highlighted Daniels’ kindness and dedication to his work.

Last month, Daniels suffered a heart attack while covering Saints training camp in California. With the help of Saints owner Gayle Benson, he was flown back to New Orleans to be with his family. Benson, along with other prominent figures in Louisiana sports, paid their respects to Daniels at the funeral service.

Known for his coverage of local high school sports, Daniels left a lasting impact on many, including New Orleans Saints legend Archie Manning. Manning praised Daniels’ dedication to high school sports and shared fond memories of working with him on Friday Night Football.

Those close to Daniels emphasized his professionalism and attention to detail, whether covering high school or professional sports. Cheryl Gills, a longtime viewer of Daniels’ work, expressed her gratitude for his consistent sports coverage and joined the community in saying goodbye to a respected figure in Louisiana sports journalism.

In honor of Daniels, the Superdome was illuminated in white light on Thursday night. He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. As a final tribute, it can be said that Ed Daniels left it all on the field and now rests in peace.
