Standardized test results for Louisiana students were released, showing minimal gains in some areas but overall little movement from the previous year. The scores, which represent mastery of English, math, and science for grades 3-8, remain below 2019 levels at 34%. While some improvements were seen in English Language Arts for certain grades, math mastery rates stayed the same or declined in most grades.
Eighth-graders particularly struggled this year, with scores dropping in every subject compared to last year. This trend is reflected in a nationwide study that found middle schoolers were significantly affected by pandemic learning loss. State Superintendent of Education, Dr. Cade Brumley, acknowledged the need for increased outcomes and highlighted efforts to support teachers, provide tutoring, and expand access to high-quality schools.
Despite the challenges presented by the pandemic, Louisiana education officials remain committed to improving student performance. With a focus on supporting teachers and students with resources and interventions, the goal is to ensure that students are receiving a high-quality education that prepares them for future success. As the state continues to refine its education system, the hope is that future test results will show even greater gains in student achievement.
